一、辨主语
虽然四者均可表示“花费”，但所用主语不同：cost的主语通常是事或物(包括形式主语it)；spend的主语只能是人；take的主语可以是事或物(包括形式主语it)，也可以是人；pay的主语只能是人。如：

二、辨宾语
cost的宾语通常是钱，take的宾语通常是时间，而spend的宾语则可以是时间或钱，pay的宾语是钱。如：

三、辨句型
从句型结构来看，三者的通常句型为：
sthcosts(sb)money某物花某人多少钱
itcosts(sb)moneytodosth做某事花某人多少钱
sbspendstime(money)onsth某人在某一方面花多少钱
sbspendstime(money)（in）doingsth某人在做某事上花多少时间（钱）
ittakessbtimetodosth做某事花某人多少时间

（2）一组和“睡觉”有关的词
sleep“睡觉”，延续性行为动词
sleepy“困乏的；欲睡的”
asleep“睡着的；熟睡的”，表语形容词
