一、过去进行时

1.含义及构成

过去进行时表示过去某一时刻或某一段时间正在进行或发生的动作,其结构为:was/were+doing。

2.用法:

①表示过去某一段时间内正在进行的动作。

如:Wewerehavingclassesallthatday.那天我们整天都在上课。

②表示过去某一时刻正在进行或发生的动作。与过去某一特定的时间状语连用,常见的有:at3o’clockyesterdayafternoon,inthosedays,atthistimeyesterday等。

③表示过去一个动作发生时,另一个动作正在进行,持续时间长的动作用过去进行时,常用在while引导的时间状语从句中。

二、when与while在引导从句时的区别

1.用when引导的状语从句表示时间,说明一个动作发生时,另一个动作正在进行,也可表示正在进行某一动作时,另一动作发生了。如:

Thestudentsweredrawingpictureswhentheteachercamein.当老师进来时,学生们正在画画。

MypendroppedonthegroundwhenIwaswalkinginthepark.当我正在公园散步时,我的钢笔掉在了地上。

2.用while引导的从句一般用过去进行时,表示正在进行某个动作时,发生了另一个动作,这时主句用一般过去时。如:

Whilehewasreading,thetelephonerang.当他正在看书时,电话铃响了。

三、过去进行时与一般过去时的区别

过去进行时强调某一动作是在过去某时正在进行,一般用到的动词是表示具体行动,动作可延续的,同时用到的时间状语表示的范围要小且具体。而一般过去时对谓语动词没有什么限制,用到的时间状语范围不受限制,一般过去时着重表示在过去做过,基本上是一个结束了的动作。表过去状态,抽象,不表具体动作行为的动词不用过去进行时,但可以用一般过去时。如:

Mr.Greenwasmendinghisdaughter’sbikethismorning.(强调动作正在进行)

Mr.Greenmendedhisdaughter’sbikethismorning.(表示动作做过,并结束了)
